Know the Ins and Outs of Periodontal Disease

July 21, 2015

Periodontal disease is a lot more common than most patients realize.

.

Periodontal disease, or gum disease as it’s more widely known, is the result of a buildup of bacteria that went untreated. If you’re presently dealing with this problem, we apologize. The pain can be excruciating and almost unbearable at times. You may not think there’s any way to deal with it, but we can provide you with services that will keep your pain-free from here on out. Gum disease is the result of sticky plaque that has sat on your teeth for far too long and resulted in your gums taking the hit. Our Prince Albert, SK office has treated many cases of periodontal disease with the utmost care and comfort for our patients. If you’re currently suffering from gum disease, know that Dr. Janzen can fix it with our periodontal services.

Gum Disease Stats and Symptoms

Gum disease is suffered by about 47% of the U.S. population over the age of 30. That’s almost 65 million people. That’s insane. It’s a growing epidemic but it is absolutely not impossible to prevent. It’s a staggering number that is growing everyday, but we want to do everything we can to keep that number as low as possible.

If you think you may be suffering from gum disease but aren’t sure, there are symptoms you can keep an eye out for to make things easier. Keep a close eye out for the following:

  • Swelling of the gums and/or redness
  • Gums that are pulling away from the teeth
  • Teeth that look like they’re longer because the roots have been exposed
  • Terrible pain while brushing and flossing
  • Teeth that look and feel loose
  • Persistent halitosis (bad breath)
  • Over-sensitivity to hot and cold while eating and/or drinking

It’s important to know that even though these are the most common symptoms, there may be no symptoms at all. So, it’s always best to schedule an appointment with us regardless. We can keep a close tabs on what’s going on inside of your mouth.
