Check-In
Even if you’ve filled in all the forms you need to update prior to your visit, it is important to arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment so you can check in, sign any necessary documents, and relax a bit before your exam. A Thorough Cleaning
After you’ve checked in, a member of your dental team will escort you to the exam room and ensure you are comfortable. Then, you’ll get a professional cleaning to remove hardened deposits of plaque and tartar from your teeth. Typically, this only takes about 30 minutes; however, if it’s been a while since you’ve last had a cleaning, it may take longer, and in some cases, you may need to return for a second visit to complete it. The good news is that it will all be worth it in the end, when you have a bright, white smile and lower risk of cavities and gum disease!
X-Rays & Imaging
Once your dental team has gotten your grin gleaming again, it’s time for updated X-rays. In most cases, your dental insurance will cover one set annually; however, this depends on the last time you were in, and if you have any oral health issues that need more advanced imaging. The photos taken at this step will in turn be used by your dentist during your exam to help her or him diagnose any oral health issues that may not be visible to the naked eye.
Oral Cancer Screening
Next, you’ll receive a thorough oral cancer screening. Each year, 8,200 people are diagnosed with this life-threatening condition in Canada, and many of those are initially discovered during routine oral cancer screenings from a dentist!
A Comprehensive Dental Exam
Finally, you’ll meet with your dentist, who will carefully examine your teeth, gums, and jaw. Not only will she or he be on the lookout for any issues that appear in your X-rays, but also for anything that is visible in plain sight. Then, if everything looks good, you’ll be free to check out with your dentist’s friendly front desk team.
